Before starting ABA therapy, every child begins with a skills assessment. This is the foundation of the treatment plan and helps us understand your child’s unique abilities, challenges, and learning style. Parents often wonder what this process looks like—think of it as a structured way for us to get to know your child through play, conversation, and observation.
Skills Assessments

What happens during the assessment

  • A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or trained supervisor meets with you and your child.
  • We use a combination of direct observation, interactive play, and structured activities to learn how your child communicates, follows instructions, handles transitions, and interacts with others.
  • We also ask caregivers about daily routines, areas of concern, and long-term goals for their child.
  • Depending on your child’s age and needs, we may use standardized tools such as the VB-MAPP, Essentials for Living, Socially Savvy, PEAK, ABLLS-R, and AFLS. These assessments give us a clear picture of your child’s developmental level compared to what is expected for their age.
Skills Assessments service

What parents can expect

  • The assessment is not a test your child can “fail.” Instead, it is a way to see what they can already do and where they may need support.
  • It may look like play—using toys, books, or games—but each activity gives us important information about skills and learning style.
  • Parents are active participants. You’ll be asked about your child’s strengths, challenges, and what matters most to your family.

Why it matters

The results of the assessment allow us to design an individualized ABA treatment plan that fits your child’s needs. Goals are not random—they come directly from the information gathered in this process. For example, if your child struggles with transitions, we may set a goal around using visual schedules or timers. If they have difficulty asking for help, we may design a communication goal.

Ongoing assessments

Skills assessments are not one-time events. We reassess regularly to track progress, update goals, and ensure therapy continues to meet your child’s needs. This means that as your child grows and learns, their plan grows with them.

The takeaway for families

Skills assessments are the first step in ABA therapy and ensure that treatment is truly personalized. They give you and your child’s team a roadmap for progress, with goals that make a real difference in daily life—like communicating wants and needs, building independence, and feeling more confident at home and in the community.
